Characters

Everyone in Flutie Cats is a real animal. The ears, the coats, the tails and the sizes are all theirs, copied from life rather than invented. Tap a name for the story.

  Rocco

  the legend

  Dog. Black and tan, big upright ears, a white muzzle, no tail. In memoriam.

  The story

  The legendary perfect dog: whatever a leading man is supposed to be, Rocco is that, and the coolest dog ever. Somebody docked his tail before he was old enough to have a say, and he spent the rest of his life making his own decisions, which is what finally got him: he let himself out one night and did not come home from it. He sang along when the flute came out and sat through hours of piano. For a while he lived in a little travel trailer with Smokey and her whole litter, seven cats and a dog. He never met Randy. He leads the roster in the game because the first character everybody gets is the one who always answered the music.

  Star

  the sensible one

  Dog. Slate blue-gray, one ear up and one folded over, white at the throat.

  The story

  Star turned up at a Christmas photo shoot for a client, and that was the day they met. She jumps on the piano and barks at people out the window, which in the game becomes her power: she rides an electric keyboard like a surfboard, and her barking and singing do the work. A couple of years older than Ella, so older and wiser, but not by that much. Leave her alone with the cats and nothing gets broken. She only ever misbehaves in Ella's company, and then she is a willing accomplice.

  Ella

  the beautiful destroyer

  The story

  Ella came from a friend who could not keep her in an apartment. She was supposed to be passed along to somebody else and never was. She is the most jealous, attention-loving dog alive: she runs everywhere, jumps on everything, and breaks things the way weather does. Nobody punishes her for it, because she is blameless. On a walk she goes eleven and a half steps ahead and waits. In the universe she is the wild card, always on a new side hustle, always careless, always the reason the plan fell apart. She gets around on an electric scooter and wears t-shirts that say the planet needs saving, which, with her running total further down, is the joke.

  Xica

  the kid

  Cat. Blue-gray, short-haired, all legs and ears. The youngest, and the only one who will grow up.

  The story

  The kid. Xica is into everything: every shelf, every lap, every doorway somebody wanted shut. Half the room wants her out and the other half keeps letting her back in. She and Elvis are the two who live together. In the universe she is the middle-schooler of the cast, twelve or thirteen, and the one character who actually grows up as the seasons go by.

  Cat. Black and white, retired, and a past nobody has been told. Boy or girl is a mystery that does not need solving.

  The story

  A stray who came to the family after the old house cat wandered off for good. Shy and scratchy at first, now very cool and very good with the dogs. Boy or girl? A mystery, and a mystery that does not need solving: Elvis can be either, and it does not matter. Went missing for a few days one September and came back like nothing had happened. In the universe: older, retired, a little mysterious, and always in black and white. A tuxedo one day, slacks and a blazer the next.

  Randy Boy

  The story

  Randy arrived as a kitten with a relative of a friend who was staying a while: tiny, full of worms, not growing, and so obviously a girl that he spent his first weeks called Charlotte. Then he got dewormed, ate his way through the tubes of cat food, became a voracious eater and then a big, handsome cat, and everybody noticed why the name had to change. He sleeps out by choice and waits on the porch or in the driveway every morning to be let in and fed. Soft spoken. Loves to eat. He is the one in the universe with the job: he plays flute, he teaches it, and he takes the pictures.

  Smokey

  Cat. Blue-gray and long-haired, a full ruff and a plume tail. The eldest, and the one everybody checks with first.

  The story

  The eldest. Smokey was born on a construction site, rescued, and handed over by a friend. She had one litter, in a little travel trailer, and raised them all. Some went to homes of their own, and one of them stayed with her. She tears strips off any paper she can reach and knocks everything off the desk. In the universe she is the mama of the cast, a woman in her mid-thirties who is also a cat, and the accountant, which is why she is the one keeping Ella's ledger.

Every price is a replacement estimate until a receipt says otherwise. Nobody is punished for any of this. She is blameless.

Beta testers wanted

The games are being tested by real flute players, kids and grown-ups, before anybody else sees them. Testing is by invitation for now: a tester gets a code, and the code opens the Play door. If you play the flute and want in, ask the person who sent you here.
